Peaceful Coexistence

The culture of Peace of the Colombian Political Constitution.



The Constitution for peace made up of the content of the political letter that seeks the construction, consolidation and guarantee of a stable and lasting peace. All Colombians are responsible for guaranteeing peace.


The 1991 National Constituent Assembly recognized that the violence and the armed conflict had seriously affected human rights, and considered necessary a Political Constitution that would oblige the State to guarantee the right to peace and the duty of Colombians to contribute to its consolidation.


The Preamble of the Political Constitution is based on establishing the purposes of the State to ensure life, coexistence, work, justice, equality, knowledge, freedom and peace for all people. Rights without which it is not possible to recognize the principle of respect for human dignity and the right to a stable and lasting peace.


Likewise, the Political Constitution observed that to guarantee peaceful coexistence it is necessary to respect the principle of human dignity, which is based on the recognition of the human condition and the rights to life, social welfare and the validity of a fair order.


Respect for the right to human dignity leads to the recognition of reason, the capacity for the development of thought and the possibility of deciding without ignoring the rights of other people and of those who, due to their condition of vulnerability, require the attention of others. The Political Constitution establishes obligations that must be fulfilled to guarantee the peaceful coexistence of a society that recognizes and roots culture of peace.


In conclusion, the National Constituent Assembly established the priority of guaranteeing peaceful coexistence, not only for the fulfillment of the obligations of the State but also for the duty of the people to ensure the maintenance of peace.
