Darkness falls and Ralph proposes that they wait until morning to climb the mountain because it will be difficult to hunt the monster at night. Jack challenges Ralph to join the hunt, and Ralph finally agrees to go. Ralph, Roger, and Jack start to climb the mountain, and then Ralph and Roger wait somewhere while Jack climbs to the top alone. He returns, out of breath, claiming to have seen the monster. Ralph and Roger go up to take a look and see a terrifying shadowy shape. Horrified, the children go down the mountain to warn the group.
The boys get to work and build a new fire sign, but many of them sneak out into the night to join Jack's group. Simon escapes from the camp and returns to the jungle where he used to sit marveling at the beauty of nature. Now, he finds the head of a sow. Simon sits alone, staring at the pig's head, which is now with flies. The head speaks to Simon with the voice of the "Lord of the Flies". Terrified by the apparition, Simon fainted.
Simon wakes up and finds his nose bleeding. He crawls up the hill and sees the dead pilot with his parachute. He realizes that the boys have mistaken the pilot for the deadly beast.
Suddenly, the boys see a shadowy figure coming out of the forest, it's Simon but the boys don't recognize him. Screaming that he is the beast, the boys begin to rip Simon apart with their hands and teeth. Simon desperately tries to explain what has happened and reminds them who he is, but he stumbles over the rocks and onto the beach. The boys fall over him violently and kill him.
All except Sam, Eric, and a few littluns have joined Jack's tribe, which is now on Castle Rock, the island's mountain. There, Jack rules with absolute power. Children are punished for no reason. The entire tribe, including Jack, seems to believe that Simon was the beast and that the beast is capable of assuming any disguise.
The boys at Ralph’s camp go to sleep and Ralph sleeps with nightmares. They are awakened by the howling of a group of Jack’s hunters who attacked them. The hunters brutally beat Ralph and his companions, who don’t even know why they were attacked. But Piggy knows why, because the hunters have stolen his glasses, and with them, the power to make fire.
The next morning, Piggy suggests that Ralph hold a meeting to discuss their options.
As Piggy tries to speak, hoping to remind the group of the importance of rules, Roger shoves a massive rock down the mountainside and knocks him off to his death on the rocks below. Then Jack throws his spear at Ralph, and the other boys quickly join in.
As Ralph is escaping, he stumbles across the sow’s head, the Lord of the Flies. Angry, he knocks the skull to the ground and takes the stake to use it as a weapon against Jack.
That night, Ralph goes to the camp at the Castle Rock and finds Sam and Eric guarding the entrance. They tell him that Jack plans to send the tribe after him the next day. Ralph hides and falls asleep. In the morning, he hears Jack torturing one of the twins to find out where Ralph is hiding. Then Ralph smells smoke and realizes that Jack has set the jungle on fire. At last, he ends up very exhausted on the beach.
Suddenly, Ralph looks up to see a naval officer standing over him. He says that they had seen the fire and arrived there, and asked how many people were there and if anyone had died. Ralph replied to him and finally, they all went back home on the boat.
