A Sound of Thunder: Its Analysis

Author: Ray Bradbury

Characters: Eckels, Mr. Travis, Lesperance, Billings, Kramer, Deutscher, Keith

Setting: There are two settings; the office, in the United States, and the Jungle in the prehistoric era.

Exposition: It’s when Eckels enters the office of Time Safari, Inc. where he would pay to go to the prehistoric era to shoot a dinosaur, specifically a Tyrannosaurus rex.

Rising action: They get in the time machine, and Travis is very strict telling Eckels he must not go off the path and only do as they say since any small mistake could change history.

Climax: While trying to get back to the time machine, Eckels goes off the path and accidentally kills a butterfly.

Falling action: When they got back, everything changed and Eckels realised what he had done.

Resolution: When Travis found out about what Eckels had done, he shot him.

New resolution: After returning, while talking to the man behind the desk, they realized what Eckels had caused. This angered Travis so much that he tried to shoot him, but he couldn’t because suddenly there was a loud explosion that caused the building to collapse. Soon the noise of sirens and ambulances was felt, and then they determined that it was all a gas

Theme: It’s about how our actions, wrong or right, can cause disturbances in our environment or humanity.

Voice: Third person omniscient.

Mood: Suspense, fear, intense

Tone: Informal, serious, critical

Conflict:

Man vs self Eckels gets scared and refuses to shoot the dinosaur.

Man vs man Travis gets mad at Eckels for going off the path and makes him dig the bullets out. Also, at the end, Travis finds out what Eckels had done, so he shot him.

Man vs nature Eckels steps on the butterfly and kills it, which changes history.

Man vs society The Government doesn’t like them time travelling, and they have to pay a big graft to keep their franchise. When Eckels went off the path, Travis said that he will have to report to the government and they might revoke their license to travel.
