A Random Future, EF Challenge

A Random Future, EF Challenge

Good morning, I’m Nashla Puerta, an 8th grader at American School and I’m honored to be sharing with all of you what my hopes for the future of our society are.

Nowadays, we think we have everything solved, everything “easy” as some people refers, but believe it or not the future is something we imagine is far away from where we are now, but it’s closer than we think.

Sadly, we live in a society where our feelings don't matter, our opinion can be criticized by anyone, as we can see in the following news article ”Miss Colombia hits out transsexual Miss Universe candidate” just because she said “ the beauty pageant is for women who are born women” (El País newspaper).

In neighboring countries, where people are running away because they don’t have any basic
resources for living; as an example, we have that “ more than three million Venezuelans have fled in recent years as the country grapples with hyperinflation and shortages of essential goods, the UN says”( BBC newspaper),  where people that have committed sexual abuse or have killed people are still free walking on the same streets as you and I. We, as an advanced society, still don’t know how to use technology in order to contribute to our development, not only in a scientific or economic way, but also in a social form, where technology has become a lethal weapon against, not only teenagers, but also for kids and adults.

Unfortunately, future generations are not going to be able to enjoy the amazing natural resources that our world provides thanks to any kind of pollution, where they are not going to enjoy what was a society without a massive amount of cyberbullying or any kind of harm against them.

If the society keeps growing in this way, I think that the path that we are choosing is not the best one in social, economic or political forms. I also think that we as people, as part of our society, don’t have the need to judge other people for what they are or what the believe in, just because we want our ego to blow up or to feel better than others; the only thing you are doing is harming others and that is not the essence of having the astonishing privilege of living in a society.

“Where justice is denied, poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe”-Frederick Douglass

Thank you very much for listening, I hope that our future can change my expectations and that we as the next generation can make a change in our world.
