Dasha:
Leonard Mead is a resident in an unnamed city in 2053 who likes to take walks at night and enjoys the silence, the concrete, and the grass.
In his city, the paths are always empty since people (gray phantoms) live hypnotized by the screens and the monotonal lives that make them stay inside their tombs. One particular evening, while he was whispering to every house on channel 4, he heard a mechanical noise coming from the distance.
He was one block away from his house when a police car stopped beside him, and a mechanical voice asked him his name and information.
M: "Put up your hands!"
J: "But-"
M: . "Your hands up! Or we'll Shoot!" "Your name?"
J: "Leonard Mead,"
M: "Speak up!"
J: "Leonard Mead!"
M: "Business or profession?"
J: "I guess you'd call me a writer."
M: "No profession,"
J: "You might say that, "
M: "No profession," "What are you doing out?"
J: "Walking,"
M: "Walking!"
J: "Just walking,"
M: "Walking, just walking, walking?"
J: "Yes, sir."
M: "Walking where? For what?"
J: "Walking for air. Walking to see."
M: "Your address!"
J: "Eleven South Saint James Street."
M: "And there is air in your house, you have an air conditioner, Mr. Mead?" J: "Yes."
M: "And you have a viewing screen in your house to see with?"
J: "No."
M: "No?" "Are you married, Mr. Mead?"
J: "No."
M: "Not married,"
J: "Nobody wanted me,"
M: . "Don't speak unless you're spoken to!" "Just walking, Mr. Mead?" J: "Yes."
M: "But you haven't explained for what purpose."
J: "I explained; for air, and to see, and just to walk."
M: "Have you done this often?"
J: "Every night for years."
M: "Well, Mr. Mead," it said. "Is that all?"
J: "Yes,"
M: "Here." "Get in."
J: "Wait a minute, I haven't done anything!"
M: "Get in."
J: "I protest!"
M: "Mr. Mead." "Get in."
J: "Where are you taking me?"
M: "To the Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies."
