Analysis of Two Folk Tales

The spirit chief names the animal people

by: Mourning Dove

Setting: Spirit chief lodge, Coyote’s house and the sweat-house.

Characters:

  • Spirit Chief

  • Spirit Chief’s wife

  • Coyote

  • Mole (Coyote’s wife)

  • The fox (Coyote’s brother)

  • Other animals…

Plot:

Exposition

The spirit chief receives the animals, and warns them that on the next day he was going to give the names for each one. Everyone was excited, but no one wanted to be called a coyote.

Rising Action

The Coyote arrives at his house, meets his wife and they argue because thanks to his pride and wanting to feel more than others, he warns her that if he becomes chief, they will no  longer have a relationship.

Climax

The next day, he had arrived late to where the spirit chief was, so it was his turn to keep his name Coyote. But the chief spirit gives him good news, and it is that he would also be chief if he fulfilled a mission, to save the animals. Therefore he gave her a power that was to become any object and his brother could revive him.

Falling action

After the Coyote left, the chief spirit decided to create a place where the animals take refuge, can pray, stay if they are sick and where they can purify themselves, called the sweat-house.

Resolution

The wife of the spirit chief, takes care of the place, called the sweat-house. Animals could not see her, but she could see them for many generations, and in her heart there is love and empathy.

Theme: Accept yourself as you are, as we all have something special.

Mood: Arrogant, haughty and superb.

Tone: Informal and very haughty.

Voice: 3rd person - omniscient.

Conflict

Man vs. Self

We can see that the coyote does not have self-acceptance by his name, he was also arrogant and wanted to feel more than the others because he was going to have the position of Chief, when it was not like that.

Man vs. Man

I can attach the mistreatment of the coyote to Mole, his wife, for arrogance and the desire to feel more than the rest of the animals. Also when the children were hungry and preferred not to give them anything to eat.

Man vs. Society - Nature

When the animals fought over names, but they never wanted to have "Coyote" as their name because it was so ugly. And in the end, "Coyote" was an important name, since he became chief.

Man vs. Superpower

The power that the chief spirit gave the Coyote, which was about being able to turn into any object when he is in danger and that the fox, his brother, could revive him.

Ending by Me…

Another ending that I would give to the story is that instead of the spirit chief having given him superpowers, he would have received 3 stones that would help him in any situation. That is, if he was in danger, he would throw a stone and save him from this situation. But since he only had three stones, they ran out quickly and he had to leave his position as chief because he realized that without the stones it was very complicated, and the spirit chief refused to give him more since it was a reward for the name he received.

  • What was the name of Coyote's wife?

  • What was the super power that the spirit chief gave to the Coyote?

  • What was the name of the place or shelter for animals?

  • What is a good story theme?

  • What were the benefits of the sweat-house?

Coyote Steals the Sun and Moon

By: Richard Erdoes.

Setting: a small pueblo, where will they find light.

Characters:

  • Coyote

  • Eagle

  • Kachinas

Plot:

Exposition

Coyote meets with the Eagle to get more meat since he was a bad hunter.

Rising Action

As night approached and they could not see, they decided to go to a pueblo to look for light.  Upon reaching the pueblo, they steal the light box and fight to see who carries it.

Climax

The Coyote out of curiosity, decides to open the light box and finds the sun and the moon together, and they both escape.

Falling Action

Everything turns into winter and the Eagle gets mad at the coyote for disobeying the rule he gave him.

Resolution

The angry Eagle gives a moral to the Coyote: If your curiosity had not won you over, we would not have winter and we would be enjoying summer.

Theme: Don't let your curiosity get the best of you.

Mood: Curious - Taken advantage of - Selfish.

Tone: Defrauding - Curious.

Voice: 3rd person - Limited narrator.

Conflict

The main conflict is external, because the coyote lied to the eagle.

Man vs. Man

Here we can appreciate the fight of the Coyote with the Eagle about who was carrying the box or not.

Man vs. Self

We do not see it clear in the story, but maybe the moment where the coyote regrets opening the light box.

Man vs. Society

When the Eagle and the Coyote steal the light box in front of the Kachinas dance.

Man vs. Nature

Here we can find the forest where the Coyote and the Eagle were hunting, the cold weather thanks to winter and darkness.

Man vs. Supernatural

We can appreciate the power of the sun and the moon, which escaped from the box and did not appear again. And that thanks to his absence, everything turned into winter.

Ending by Me…

Another ending that I would give is that the eagle had escaped with the light box and the coyote had been left without light. then the eagle could have finished hunting rabbits and had food. eternal winter would not have come and the coyote would not have taken advantage of the poor eagle who only wanted to help.

  • Why did the coyote join the eagle?

  • Why did they need a light box?

  • What was the name of the dance group they found in the pueblo?

  • What did the coyote find in the box?

  • Why did the eagle get angry with the coyote at the end of the story?
