Plot Analysis
Theme: The main theme of this story goes around the reality that illegal workers have to face in order to survive and live a decent human life.
Tone: Throughout the story the narration is quite informal and conversational until the last paragraphs where it becomes more reflective or even sad.
External Conflicts:
Man vs Man: How the almost nonexistent relationship between Geraldo and Marin, who were just dance partners that barely knew each other, kept Marin from providing useful information about him to the police.
Man vs Society: Due to Geraldo’s illegal status, his relatives will never be aware of what happened to him and his death.
Internal Conflict: Marin’s confusion in this situation can be taken as an internal conflict since she was unable to help someone even though she wanted to.
Climax: I believe the climax of this story starts when we are announced that Geraldo, whose last name isn't given, is dead after the hit and run and that Marin is the last person to see him alive.
Resolution: We are not given an actual solution to the problem, the story finishes off by letting us know that he dies and Marin is left with doubts about his family not knowing he died but still thinking about how at the same time it is better for them to not know in a way.
Protagonists and Antagonists: The main characters in this story are clearly Geraldo and Marin since they carry out the main events happening throughout the narrative however I believe the protagonist or who the story is about is Marin, that’s because the main character commonly undergoes some kind of change and in this story we see the effect of Geraldo’s reality on Marin. On the other hand I see the antagonist as the immigration policies or economic failures in countries that got Geraldo to work illegally and go anonymously.
