W. M. Kelley's Story's Read Analysis

A Visit to Grandmother

Theme: I think the central topic in this story is the importance of communication and family. Throughout the story, we could see the lack of communication the family had, which created misunderstandings between them. The bitterness that created the silence, affected the relationship Charles and his mother had, resounding in the relationship of Chig and the rest of the family. But it is also clear for us the importance of family, and how they will always be there for you no matter what happens. Even if he doesn't believe it, her other will always support him and love him.

Voice: The authors keeps it simple, with short sentences. There was no suspense since the beginning we knew an argument between mother and son was going to happen. She reveals the outcome too soon, describing the face of the father.

Mood: It was a tense mood throughout the whole story Charles was boiling and trying to keep calm. The reader was just waiting the moment where Charles was going to explode.

Tone: The tone was full of bitterness and revenge. Charles kept the idea that her mother didn't love him, and always spent more attention on his brother instead of him. The feeling that was trapped inside him was like a monster that each year became bigger until it exploded.

Conflicts:

Inner:

Chig: He was feeling weird and worried about his father and his grandmother. While he was having a nice conversation at the table, he was tense and with a pale face. I think he didn't know how to react to the fact that his father was crying and seemed so vulnerable, like a little boy.

Charles: Charles was sad and desperate because of the feeling he has towards his mother and brother. He thinks that his mother loves GL more, and during all these years he didn't want to visit his mother, because of the resentment he was feeling, he wanted his mother to say that she was sorry and he was right, but she didn't and he was boiling in anger.

External:

Man vs Man: Charles vs his mother. The misunderstanding they had because of not communicating.

Man vs Man: Charles vs his bother. Charles always had a bad relationship with him because he thought that their mother loved GL more.

Man vs Society: At that time, racism was at its highest point, and in the text, Charles says that his mother loved GL more because he was light-skinned, referring to the racism that black people suffered because of their skin color.

Man vs Nature: Human nature can be sometimes weird and unpredictable. We don't know what a person is feeling or how is going to react. Feelings are one of the main points in this story.

Climax: Grandma finishes her story and Charles blasts out.

Resolution: Charles stays angry and seems like he is never returning to his home.

Changed one (New):

After Charles heard the voice of his brother, he came downstairs and looked him in the eye. "Hey Man! Long time no see!" At the moment he was going to hug his brother, Chig saw the punch of his father up in the air and then on the cheek of GL. A fight started, and there was no one to stop the fire that was burning inside of Charles.
