Coronavirus: The New Pandemic

Do you remember a few months ago the article about the Coronavirus? Did you ever think that the situation would ever be this tragic?

The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the rapidly spreading of a coronavirus outbreak, a new pandemic, acknowledging what has seemed clear for some time, that the virus will likely spread to all countries in the globe.

As of Wednesday, 114 countries have reported that 118,000 have contracted Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, known as SARS-CoV2, and as a result, nearly 4,300 people have died.

In the United States, where for weeks state and local laboratories could not test for the virus, just over 1,000 cases have been diagnosed and 29 people have died. But authorities here warn continuing limits on testing mean the full scale of spread in this country is not yet known.

Our President, Ivan Duque, declared on Thursday morning the national health emergency in Colombia, as a preventive measure against the spread of the Covid-19 virus that has already reported nine cases in the country, although none of them so far is fatal.

The first lines of action are taken care of ourselves, said our President, but it  goes through changing certain health habits, such as avoiding contact with people, not kissing or hugging, and having moderate distances between interlocutors, which "may reduce the chances of contagion in more than a 50%.

"All public events of more than 500 people are cancelled. These events should be avoided with the competition from local health authorities starting at 3 p.m. today (Thursday)," Duque said.

Just two days ago, the postponement of the IDB assembly in Barranquilla was made public, a decision confirmed by Mayor Jaime Pumarejo, after consultation with President Duque and the IDB presidency. The assembly was rescheduled for September, when the alarm by the Coronavirus is expected to have finished.

People should be more careful than ever, looking after you and your family, wash your hands and never fortget your vitamin C!
