Masks: Life's Turning Point

Poor But Rich

Juan was a 16 year old boy who won a scholarship in the
most expensive school in town, so his parents were really happy because they knew he was intelligent, that he would win the opportunity; then, the boy was happy, but not that much, he knew deep inside that the scholarship was a blessing, but also a curse.

He was poor and everyone in that school was rich, their homes were mansions, and their parents had power in town, he was really humble, and he knew he wouldn’t fit in with rich people. That school was only for the arrogant sons of corrupt politicians, and wealthy families.

Juan was scared that his last years of school were going to be a torture, he also thought about the fact of not accepting the scholarship, but he knew he would disappoint his parents who worked very hard for him, so he accepted it. He wanted to give their parents the life they deserved.

On his first day, his father drove him to school, his father was so happy and proud of his son, he couldn’t stop smiling, he also told him, that he needed to be focused on his own thing, not in what other people thought or said about him. He already knew that, but he appreciated the comment. He got out of the car feeling poor seeing all those expensive cars that he couldn’t afford.

He told himself he needed to be positive, to have a good day, so that’s what he did. In first period he was nervous, but he entered the class, sat at the front, and he started paying attention; suddenly, he heard some laughs at the back of the classroom, he didn’t know what it was, when he saw what was going on, he saw the mean group laughing at his shoes, they were old, and his father didn’t have any money to buy him another pair, so he needed to wear those ones. Immediately, he felt awful, ashamed, and angry. Having money doesn’t give the right to make fun of me, they do not know me, that’s what he told himself to feel better.

That same day at lunch, he went to the cafeteria and he ordered his lunch, he started eating, suddenly he saw a beautiful redhead girl walking by, he couldn’t stop staring at her because she was amazing.  He was really surprised when that same girl sat down next to him and greeted. He froze, he got lost in those green beautiful eyes, he couldn’t stop staring at her when her beautiful voice gets him out of his trance, hi? Hello? What’s your name new boy?

Those three simple questions he will never forget.  My name is Juan and yours? Marine, nice to meet you. Juan was surprised he couldn’t believe he was talking to a beautiful rich girl.  Ohhh, darling!, if she knew I’m poor, she wouldn’t be near me, he thought. Little did he know how wrong he was, marine already knew he was poor, the whole school knew about it, he was the scholarship guy. But Marine didn’t care for  his money, but about his heart.

These two guys starting knowing each other, more and more
and more. One day, Marine invited Juan to her house. Marine’s brother didn’t like the idea, he hated the guy, he warned her about him taking or stealing anything, when he told her that Marine got mad. She couldn’t believe how his brother had so little brain. When Juan got there, Marine’s brother got first to the door and “welcomed” the guest, he told him that he needed to be careful that his poor hands didn’t deserve his sister or being there.

Juan got mad, he just walked in and said nothing. Marine came 2 minutes later, they started talking, playing around, and all of that. When Juan got a call from her mom telling him he needed to come home, as soon as possible, because his Dad passed away. In that second Juan’s heart fell to the ground to never get in his chest again.

He was devastated, he couldn’t believe it, he just couldn’t. Marine took him home and helped  him. That night her mother told Juan a secret, that his grandfather was a very rich man, he and his father had an agreement, it was if one day he died his father was going to help us, and his grandfather took the lead of the family and supported them since that day.

That meant that since that very second Juan Castro was rich. He was sad and from that very second he disgusted out that money because you can’t buy everything. Maybe money could pay for his school or a car or the house, but it could never bring his father back from death.

One month later, Juan got to school in the same old car his father took him to school on his first day of class. Everybody thought he still was the same poor guy. Juan never wanted to reveal the money he had, so he could know which were his real friends and who were the ones that only cared about money.
