The New Species Discovered By Scientists
Every year a lot of species are discovered by scientists, but are not "normal" animals, they are characterized by being bizarre creatures with strange survival strategies.
These species have been determined by an international committee of taxonomists. The new species hail from Brazil, Costa Rica, Indonesia, the Canary Islands, Japan, Australia, China, and the US. Here are some of the new discovered species:
Xuedytes bellus: An adaptable beetle
This animal is adapted to permanent darkness in caves by losing their beetle shape, wings and growing long legs, having now new spiders and ants traits, which is an example of an animal with a convergent evolution. This new ground beetle from China is less than half an inch long and was discovered in a cave in Du'an, Guangxi Province.
Epimeria Quasimodo: A literary amphipod
Is a 2 inch Antartic Ocean amphipod with a humped back. It is one of the 26 new discovered species of the genus Epimeria from the Southern Ocean, known for their incredible spines and vivid colors. “Using a combination of morphology and DNA evidence … investigators have demonstrated in comprehensive monograph just how little we yet know of these spectacular invertebrates,” the taxonomists write.
