The Song of Achilles by Madelline Miller, Review
“Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus has
been exiled to the kingdom of Pythia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus
and his golden son, Achilles, "The best of all the Greeks" .Achilles
is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the
boys become close, and their bond grows stronger into adulthood.
When word comes that Helen of Sparta has
been kidnapped, the men of Greece, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced
by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause and Patroclus
follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before
and demand a terrible sacrifice”
This is a retelling story of one of the most
studied Greek stories of all times, Achilles and the Trojan War, and it’s
absolutely engaging, the book is narrated from Patroclus´ point of view, which
is one of the things I found the most interesting from the story, because
normally, we know more about Achilles, because he is the demigod, the hero of
the story and all the focus is on him, but in this book, we also get to know Patroclus,
and the way he dealt with everything that was going on.
The setting is absolutely perfect, and it
is so easy to depict everything happening that you will be transported into old Greece. In
this book the characters are so close to the reader that you will feel what
they feel, you will laugh, cry, mourn and fall in love. If you like Greek
history, Greek myths and a journey full of emotions, this is the perfect choice.
